Why Interior Painting Quotes Vary So Much
If you have gotten three interior painting quotes and received three very different numbers, you are not alone. Interior painting is one of the most variable home improvement services in terms of pricing, and the gap between the cheapest and most expensive quote on the same job is often significant.
The variation almost always comes down to three things: what is included in the scope, what products are being used, and how much prep work is built into the price. A low quote typically means minimal prep, cheaper paint, or line items that will show up as extras later. A higher quote from a reputable contractor reflects thorough preparation, premium coatings, and a complete scope of work.
The Factors That Drive Interior Painting Cost
Square footage and room count. The most obvious factor. More walls mean more time and more material. Contractors typically price interior work by the room, by linear foot of wall space, or by overall square footage of the home depending on the scope.
Ceiling height. This is one of the most underestimated cost drivers in Palm Beach County homes. Standard 8 to 9 foot ceilings can be reached with standard ladders and basic equipment. Homes with 10, 12, or 14 foot ceilings require more time and different equipment. Two-story foyers, vaulted great rooms, and coffered ceilings add significant labor. Wellington estate homes and luxury properties in Boca Raton or Palm Beach regularly have ceiling heights that put interior painting in a different cost category entirely.
Surface preparation. Prep is where the real cost difference lives. A thorough prep includes filling nail holes and cracks, sanding rough spots, caulking gaps at trim and baseboards, priming repaired areas, and protecting floors, furniture, and fixtures. Contractors who skip or minimize prep can quote lower because they are delivering less. The result shows within a year or two.
Number of colors and coats. A single neutral color throughout requires less masking and fewer product switches than a multi-color job with accent walls and detailed trim work. Each additional color adds labor time. Darker colors often require more coats to achieve proper coverage, especially over lighter existing paint.
Trim, doors, and ceilings. Many interior quotes cover walls only. Ceilings, baseboards, door frames, crown molding, and interior doors are often priced separately. Make sure you know what is and is not included before comparing numbers. A quote that includes all surfaces is not more expensive than a walls-only quote if you actually need everything painted.
Product quality. There is a meaningful difference between a paint job done with premium interior coatings like Sherwin-Williams Emerald or Benjamin Moore Aura and one done with builder-grade materials. Premium products cover better, look better, and last longer. They cost more per gallon and that cost is reflected in the quote.
On giving price ranges: We do not give price ranges in this post and we do not give them over the phone. The honest reason is that a number without seeing the space is meaningless. Two homes with the same square footage can be completely different jobs depending on condition, ceiling height, and scope. Every estimate we give is free, in-person, and based on what is actually in front of us.
What Is Typically Included in a Professional Interior Painting Estimate
A complete interior painting estimate from a reputable contractor should include:
- Moving and covering furniture and protecting floors
- Filling nail holes, cracks, and minor surface damage
- Caulking gaps at trim, baseboards, and where walls meet ceilings
- Priming repaired areas and any surfaces that require it
- Two finish coats on all agreed surfaces
- Masking windows, hardware, and fixtures
- Full cleanup on completion
If a quote does not include these items, ask specifically what is and is not covered. The cheapest quote is often the one with the most left out.
Interior Painting in Palm Beach County Specifically
South Florida’s humidity affects interior painting in ways that homeowners from other parts of the country sometimes do not expect. High humidity slows dry times and can affect how paint cures if conditions are not managed properly. Homes with older drywall or plaster may have texture or surface irregularities that require more prep than a newer home. Coastal properties near the Intracoastal or ocean sometimes have higher ambient moisture levels that affect product selection.
Palm Beach County also has a high concentration of luxury homes with architectural details — coffered ceilings, detailed millwork, arched doorways, custom trim profiles — that require more skilled labor and more time to paint properly. These details are part of what makes these homes beautiful and they need to be treated accordingly, not rushed through.
